Folding smartphones are being bought more in Russia. Sales increased 4 times

Over the past year, four times more foldable smartphones were sold in Russia than in the previous year. The publication “Kommersant” with reference to “M.Video-Eldorado” writes that this result was influenced by a decrease in prices for devices by about 25%, although the total market share of foldable smartphones still does not exceed 1%. There are three brands on the Russian market so far, the leader among which is Samsung. It is possible that various models of Chinese manufacturers may appear this year.

At the moment, the share of foldable smartphones in Russia in piece terms is 30 million units, and in monetary terms – 730 billion rubles. This is a relatively young market that emerged in 2019. Samsung accounts for 90% of sales (Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip lines), while Huawei (Mate XS) and Motorola (Razr) account for the remaining 10%. At the same time, the South Korean manufacturer intends to increase the supply of flexible screen devices to the Russian market.

The premiere of HONOR’s first foldable smartphone, the Magic V, took place in China this month, but it is not yet clear whether this model will appear in Russia. Manufacturers believe that increased competition may spur demand, but experts are in no hurry to draw such conclusions. It’s all about the high cost of foldable smartphones, and until companies find a way to make them cheaper, sales are unlikely to skyrocket.

Now the cost of folding devices exceeds the prices for flagship models of well-known brands, so such gadgets remain a niche product, says Vladimir Skurikhin, general director of MegaFon Retail. Buying smartphones with flexible screens is more of an image decision, as well as an opportunity to own a radically different device.
