Following a “low profile”, Trump returned to New York

Donald Trump returned to New York yesterday, for the first time since leaving the White House, apparently trying to maintain a “low profile”.

The former US president now lives permanently in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, however also maintains the three-level luxury apartment at the top of Trump Tower on 5th Avenue. He arrived in New York late Sunday night and few saw him: a photo in the New York Post shows him saluting from the back seat of a car.

Yesterday noon, about 20 supporters protested peacefully outside the skyscraper, surrounded by about a dozen police officers. Some held a placard with the phrase “We love Trump”, others unfurled a huge banner with the phrase “Trump 2024”. “Trump has been tuning us in for two weeks” for a possible candidate in the 2024 presidential election, said Dion Chini, one of the rally organizers. “Jokes are coming, let’s get serious: we want him to be a candidate in 2024 and we want him to run for two terms,” he added, looking up, hoping to see the former president or one of his two eldest sons, Donald Jr. or Eric.

None of the protesters knew if the 74-year-old Trump would come down to greet them, as he often does with his supporters.

The return of the tycoon to New York, a stronghold of his Democratic opponent in the election, Joe Biden, remains discreet for the time being: no official announcement has been made about his schedule or how long he will stay in the city. The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting former presidents, did not provide any details when asked about the matter.
