«This new edition of the image magazine wants to tell about kids who have lived a past that we can't even imagine but whose future we can build together. I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart for telling us about their FOMO, but above all for sharing their dreams and their stories.”
These are the words of Charley Vezzafounder of the UNICEF NextGen Italia community and entrepreneur, as well as creator of FOMO, a reportage in images whose second edition is dedicated to unaccompanied foreign minors (MSNA) and young refugees and migrants aged between 15 and 24, welcomed into the reception system in Italy. The aim of the magazine, through its protagonists, is precisely to create awareness and highlight the challenges that these young people face every day, their resilience and their desire for the future.
FOMO stands for «Fear Of Missing Out»or the fear of being left out, and describes social anxiety characterized by the desire to be continuously connected with the lives of others and the fear of being excluded from social events or contexts.
«In December 2023, according to data provided by the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies, there was a presence of almost 140,000 people in reception centres, of which over 23,000 are unaccompanied minors. FOMO is a wonderful opportunity to talk about our work and, above all, to shed light on many stories of inclusion of children and young people that are not newsworthy, but we should tell more often. Thanks to those who worked and supported this beautiful initiative” he comments Paolo Rozera, Director General UNICEF Italy.
«Since 2016, in Italy alone, we have reached over 50,000 minors by offering legal and psychosocial support and offering them inclusion paths. Behind these numbers there are extraordinary stories. This new edition of FOMO focuses on the dreams of unaccompanied foreign minors and their resilience which can strongly contribute to the development of every community. Every unaccompanied foreign minor can be guaranteed, more than compassion, rights and opportunities to grow up in a new country” he declares Nicola Dell'Arciprete, Response Coordinator in Italy, UNICEF Office for Europe and Central Asia.
