Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has died at the age of 50. Hawkins died when the band was in Colombia where they would play with the Strokes, J. Balvin and The Libertines at the Estéreo Picnic. Five days earlier, on March 20, in Lollapalooza Argentina, they gave their last concert with Hawkins, where the drummer was the lead voice on the Queen’s “Somebody to Love” and sang in a rendition of Jane’s Addiction’s “Been Caught Steeling” and in anchor in the finale with “Everlong”. Video of this finale has been released.
The “Everlong” video from that night would end up being the last song Hawkins played with Foo Fighters. “I’m not saying goodbye,” Dave Grohl told the audience before the song began. “I do not like to say goodbye. I know we will always be back. If you come again, we will come again. Will you come again? If you come again, we will come again, so I must not say goodbye. ” At the end of the song, Hawkins tossed his baguettes into the audience, put his hand around Grohl’s shoulders and bowed with the entire band. Five days later it was clear that Taylor Hawkins would not start again there or anywhere else.
“I think Taylor is really downplaying the importance he has to the band,” Grohl said in an article for the Foo Fighters in Rolling Stone magazine last year. “Maybe because he’s not the original drummer, but my God, what would we be without Taylor Hawkins? Can you put it in your mind? It would be something completely different. ” When tensions in the studio during the recording of The Color and the Shape album led to the departure of the band’s original drummer, William Goldsmith, forcing Dave Grohl himself to sit on the drums for the album, Hawkins officially became a member. Foo Fighters in the spring of 1997, following a proposal by Grohl, according to the Athens News Agency.
In his autobiography of 2021 – entitled “The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music” – Dave Grohl referred to the drummer as his “best friend and partner in crime”. Hawkins himself had said in 2020 at Rolling Stone: “The drummer’s seat is the electric chair. He is the first to be fired. He is the first when everyone says “Madara, we did it tonight because he did it”. In fact, the drummer is the band’s toilet, but on a certain level, and the most important part. “Your job is to be the pulse of the band.”
