Food away from home should end 2022 with BRL 543 billion in revenue, says Abia

The away-from-home food sector is expected to end 2022 having generated around BRL 543 billion in revenue, equivalent to 27.3% of food industry sales. The segment includes bars, restaurants, bistros, food trucks and snack bars.

According to data from the Brazilian Food Industry Association (Abia), for this year, real growth of 10.2% is expected.

“In 2020, food service was seriously impacted by restrictions on the movement of people, which caused the closure of many businesses. That year, there was a 27.5% retraction in real revenues, breaking the positive series observed over the last few years”, comments João Dornellas, executive president of the Brazilian Food Industry Association (Abia).

The segment encompasses several categories: commercial (restaurants, snack bars, etc.), non-commercial, in which food services are part of the revenue (airline catering, hotels, hospitals and private schools, etc.); and institutional (governments).

In 2021, the segment moved BRL 460.3 billion (revenue from all types of operators) and represented 26.3% (BRL 176.3 billion) of food industry sales in the domestic market.

The executive president reinforced that there have been transformations in food service that are directly linked to the evolution of consumption habits and the pandemic.

“E-commerce, delivery and new business models have gained strength. Several brands made important business changes, growing even during the most challenging time of restrictions. However, many establishments were seriously impacted and had to deal with the low flow of customers, the high cost of inputs and numerous uncertainties”, adds Dornellas.
