Food for Christmas Supper increased 15.61% in 2022, says FecomercioSP

The items that make up the Christmas dinner had a price increase of 15.61% this year compared to the same period last year, points out the Federation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP).

The average growth in the value of food and beverages in the last 12 months reached the mark of 8.05% above the official inflation of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (RMSP).

The information is based on the Extended National Consumer Price Index – 15 (IPCA-15), released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), and shows that the items surveyed to give as gifts on the date will also make Christmas more expensive.

The readjustment for these products was 9.02%, with a real increase above inflation of 1.89%.

Among the items that rose the most are onions (137.74%), potatoes (22.75%) and chicken eggs (19.79%). Olive oil also showed a significant rise, with an 8.85% increase.

Fish, a food widely consumed at the end of the year festivities, recorded a 6.24% increase, similar to inflation of 6.99%. The whole chicken had an increase of approximately 11.69%. Already the meat had advance of 3.85% in the last 12 months.

Still, rice and tomatoes fell by 1.89% and 27.41%, respectively. However, items that are usually part of the so-called “starters” or Christmas desserts have risen considerably.

Fruits grew by 35.21% and cheese by 13.92%; the price of long life milk increased by 26.04%, and French bread, by 19.48%.

The Federation suggests that consumers research prices carefully and take advantage of promotions in supermarkets and fairs, especially “xepas”, in addition to prioritizing the purchase of seasonal fruits to ensure an affordable price.

Given the record default scenario in the capital of São Paulo and the growth in the value of products above average inflation in the RMSP, consumers, in general, will have to spend more to purchase the same items they purchased in 2021.
