Food Photography, the image of the year looks like a Caravaggio painting

Is titled Taste, Taste, the winning photo of the Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year 2021. It is a familiar image taken by the Chinese photographer Li Huaifeng for the most important prize dedicated to photographs of food and food environments. The photographer captured the home life scene in Licheng, Shanxi. It is a sunny day that comes in through the windows, like in a Caravaggio painting, to illuminate the joy of a young family preparing food.

«This photo is technically exceptional for the use of light and composition, but rises to the level of historical importance for the story and the emotion it conveys.

It tells of a year of isolation, of life in small spaces and limited communities. This image tells of love like a Madonna with child. It’s a great shot that demonstrates how photography doesn’t have to be disturbing to be great or memorable, ”explained Caroline Kenyon, director and founder of the award.

On the 10th anniversary of the award, a new category was introduced in memory of the Finnish photographer Claire Aho. The first winner is Marina Spironetti with a magnificent photo of the butcher of Panzano, Martina, a pupil of the great butcher Dario Cecchini.

In addition to the traditional prizes, there is one named after the World Food Programme. «Their use of photography», explain the jury, «serves to explain in an extraordinary way their work in dangerous and difficult places. The pandemic has increased the need for food in the world, “a famine of biblical proportions” ».

The images, which are in the gallery above, range from harvest to weddings, from laid tables to poverty, from restaurants to street food, from familiar tables to the details of the chefs’ dishes.

This year the jury, led by food photographer, David Loftus, included Fiona Shields, who leads the photography department of the Guardian, Susan Bright, writer, Nik Sharma, cookbook author and photographer, Chef Simone Zanoni, Alison Jacques, founder of the Alison Jacques Gallery and Vitalie Taittinger, President of Taittinger.
