Football player shot in attempted robbery, police say

Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. was shot on Sunday in Washington, DC. Authorities believe it was an attempted robbery or car theft, police said.

He suffered two lower extremity injuries and was taken to a local hospital, said Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Dustin Sternbeck.

Commanders confirmed the incident in a statement Sunday night.

“He suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is being treated at the hospital, where team officials are on site with him. We ask that you respect Brian’s privacy at this time,” the commanders said.

The shooting took place on the 1000th block of H Street NE, police said. Two suspects fled the scene and officers recovered a firearm nearby, Sternbeck said.

THE CNN contacted the NFL for comment.

Robinson Jr. was selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the University of Alabama. He missed the team’s final preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens Saturday night.
