Football Union of Russia withdraws appeal against FIFA ban

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced this Tuesday (5) that the Football Union of Russia (FUR) has withdrawn its appeal against the governing body of world football, FIFA, and against Polish football associations, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.

FIFA and the European confederation Uefa decided that all Russian teams, be they national teams or clubs, would be suspended from participating in their competitions after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia was supposed to host a World Cup qualifying match against Poland on March 24, but FIFA announced that Poland would automatically qualify to face Sweden or the Czech Republic in contention for the world cup.

Sport’s highest court said in a statement that the procedure would be closed soon, adding that a panel of arbitrators was being constituted, and that the procedural timetable had not yet been established.

Russia, which classifies its actions in Ukraine as “a special military operation” has also filed appeals seeking the overturning of its bans on participation in international gymnastics, rugby, rowing and skating competitions, CAS said.

Last month, Russian hopes of competing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar were effectively ended when CAS rejected a request by the Russian federation to freeze FIFA’s suspension while the appeal was considered.

Several national football associations have announced that they will not play Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, including Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic.
