After the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, several international and continental sports federations began to impose sanctions on the country and athletes.
Some punishments extend to Belarus, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
below, the CNN listed the sporting bodies that have so far suspended Russian teams from competitions or deprived the country of its right to host events.
Soccer
The International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) announced on Monday (28) in a joint statement that they have suspended all Russian national teams from their competitions “until further notice”.
Although there were no Russian teams left in the UEFA Men’s or Women’s Champions League and Men’s Conference League, Spartak Moscow’s Europa League match against RB Leipzig was cancelled, with the German club now advancing to the quarter-finals as a result. .
On the international stage, FIFA’s jurisdiction over World Cup qualifiers means that, as it stands, Russia will not be able to play the knockout match against Poland scheduled for 24 March, consequently suspending the national team’s participation in the biggest football event.
“Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all affected people in Ukraine,” the joint statement read. “Both presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and quickly so that football can once again be a vector of unity and peace between peoples.”
Athletics
The World Athletics Council announced new sanctions on Tuesday, banning all athletes from Russia and Belarus from competing in World Athletics Series events “with immediate effect”.
The board says it is also considering taking other steps, such as potentially suspending the Belarus Federation, as it has done with the Russian Athletics Federation since 2015.
Even Russian athletes who have been given permission to compete as neutrals will be excluded from World Athletics Series events “in the near future”.
“The world is horrified by what Russia has done, aided and encouraged by Belarus,” World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said in a statement. “World leaders have tried to prevent this invasion by diplomatic means, but to no avail given Russia’s unwavering intention to invade Ukraine,” he continued.
“The unprecedented sanctions being imposed on Russia and Belarus by countries and industries around the world appear to be the only peaceful way to stop and deactivate Russia’s current intentions and restore peace.”
The next events that will be affected are the World Championships in Athletics in Oregon, United States, scheduled to begin on July 15, and the World Indoor Championships, scheduled to begin on March 18.
“Anyone who knows me will understand that imposing sanctions on athletes for their government’s actions goes against the grain,” added Coe. “I protested the practice of politicians targeting athletes and sports to make political points when other sectors go about their business.”
“This is different as governments, companies and other international organizations have imposed sanctions and measures against Russia in all sectors. Sport must step up and unite these efforts to end this war and restore peace. We cannot and must not be left out.”
Ice Hockey
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) on Monday suspended all international and club teams from Russia and Belarus from competing in the organization’s events.
The entity said the decision affects several tournaments, including the men’s World Championships in May in Finland. Russia will also lose the right to host the Junior World Championships in 2023.
“The IIHF is not a political entity and cannot influence the decisions being made about the war in Ukraine,” President Luci Tardif said in the statement.
“However, we have a duty of care to all of our members and participants and must therefore do everything possible to ensure that we can operate our events in a safe environment for all teams participating in the IIHF World Championship program.
“We were incredibly shocked to see the footage that came out of Ukraine. I have been in close contact with members of the Ukrainian Ice Hockey Federation and we hope for all Ukrainians that this conflict can be resolved peacefully and without the need for further violence.”
formula 1
Last week, Formula 1 announced the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix scheduled for September 25 this year, saying that “it is impossible” for the race to go ahead “under the current circumstances”.
“We are watching developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a quick and peaceful solution to the current situation,” F1 said in a statement.
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) is meeting on Tuesday to discuss the participation of F1’s only Russian driver, Haas’ Nikita Mazepin, in this season’s World Championship.
Haas announced on Thursday that it would ditch the colors of the Russian flag on its 2022 preseason car to race in a “plain white”.
The team, from the United States, carried the blue and red in its car because of the sponsorship of Uralkali, a Russian fertilizer exporter, which gave it up.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) released a statement on Tuesday announcing “the immediate suspension of the Russian Tennis Federation (RTF) and the Belarusian Tennis Federation (BTF) from the association and the participation in the international team competition until further notice”.
In addition, the ITF also canceled all competitions that were to be held in Russia and Belarus.
The indefinite suspension means that neither Russia nor Belarus can compete in the 2022 Davis Cup or the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup. However, Russian and Belarusian players will still be able to compete as individuals on the ATP and WTA circuits and in grand slams, but will not be able to compete under the Russian or Belarusian flag “until further notice”.
The ATP and WTA released a joint statement on Tuesday condemning Russia’s actions and suspending the combined WTA/ATP event scheduled for October in Moscow.
The Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev became, on Monday, the number 1 of the ATP ranking, surpassing the Serbian Novak Djokovic.
Volleyball
Russia will be stripped of the rights to host this year’s Men’s Volleyball World Championships by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).
All Russian and Belarusian national teams, clubs and officials, as well as beach and snow volleyball athletes, will be suspended from all events until further notice.
The European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) reported that all Russian beach volleyball and snow volleyball teams, clubs, athletes and officials are suspended from the events until further decision.
