Despite the decline in the unemployment rate from 12.6% to 11.6% in the quarter from September to November 2021, as announced by the IBGE this Friday (28), experts’ expectations for the year 2022 are not a better pace in the evolution of jobs in Brazil, but a reduction.

In an interview with CNN, the economist and managing partner of Tendências Consultoria, Alessandra Ribeiro, stated that the low expectations of economic growth and high inflation should be challenging points for the job market and for family income.

“The job market will contract and the unemployment rate should remain high,” he said.

“There is some space for job creation with the return of face-to-face services and the inclusion of informal workers, but the little bargaining power [dos informais] to negotiate higher salaries will continue to affect average income in 2022 in a negative way”, he evaluated.

Ribeiro also said that he would highlight “essential services and civil construction as major vectors of employment throughout 2022”, and said that he does not see much room for growth in agriculture and industry due to the intensive use of machinery, and not employees, in these sectors.

The last PNAD shows that commerce was largely responsible for the increase in the observed occupancy rate. The sector absorbed 719,000 more people in the three months through November compared to the previous period, an increase of 4.1%.

The industry also contributed, with a 3.7% growth in hiring in the period, which represents an increase of 439 thousand people.

The accommodation and food segment, highlighted by the IBGE as one of the most affected since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, showed a 9.3% increase in the number of workers, or 438,000 more employees.
