For Lula’s assistants, Massa should continue campaigning for social rights in the 2nd round against Milei

Aides to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) understand that Sergio Massa’s campaign against the loss of rights of the Argentine population must be intensified in the second round, to avoid the complete transfer of votes from Patrícia Bullrich to Javier Milei, second placed in the dispute on Sunday (22).

Milei adopted throughout the electoral process proposals that reduce the social benefits of Argentine citizens, which was seen as a key point to guarantee Massa’s recovery after the primaries.

Argentina’s current Economy Minister jumped almost 10 percentage points from the primaries to this Sunday’s vote (22).

During the speech, after the results of the first round, Milei signaled that he should reduce his speeches in favor of the loss of the population’s social rights. The understanding of Brazilian diplomacy is that the most moderate speech should be the solution found by the far-right campaign to convince Bullrich voters.

On the other hand, Massa was advised, including by campaign members appointed by the Brazilian government, to continue with the campaign that, with him, the benefits will continue.

Elections in Argentina

The choice of the new president of Argentina will be in a second round, held on November 19, between the government leader Sergio Massa, who received 37% of the valid votes, and the far-right candidate, Javier Milei, who received 30%. In the first round, Patricia Bullrich came in third place, with 23.83%.

77.65% of voters turned out to vote, according to Argentine electoral authorities, which the Secretary General of the Presidency, Julio Vitobello, praised as an appreciation of the democratic system.

“The Argentine people, with this percentage of participation, demonstrated once again their commitment to the democratic system, especially in this year in which we complete 40 years of the democratic system, with everyone knowing what it cost the Argentine people to reach the democratic system” , he said.
