For the first time a woman at the helm of Reuters

The Reuters news agency appointed one of its distinguished journalists, the Italian Alessandra Galloni, its next director – the first woman which will lead the international news agency in its 170-year history, reports APE.

Born in Rome, the 47-year-old Galloni will replace Steven Adler, who is retiring this month after serving as director of the agency for the past decade.

At the time Adler was in charge, the Reuters has been honored with hundreds of journalistic awards, including seven Pulitzer Prizes, which is the highest journalistic distinction.

Galloni speaks four foreign languages and has extensive experience in economic and political reporting, which she covered for Reuters and formerly for the Wall Street Journal.

He is taking over the reins of the agency at a time when Reuters is facing many challenges, some of which are common to all media. Others relate to the complexity of this news organization: with around 2,450 journalists around the world, Reuters news feeds a range of different clients and is part of a much larger news business.

Reuters’ main competitors are Bloomberg News, the Associated Press, the French News Agency (AFP) and the photojournalist Getty Images.

Reuters is looking for development opportunities, most notably the upcoming launch of a refreshed website that will be aimed at professionals and over time will charge for its content.

Galloni is based in London and is considered by her colleagues to be charismatic with a keen interest in business news.

She has been the editorial director of the agency’s news staff worldwide, overseeing journalists in 200 locations around the world.

Early in her career, Galloni worked for the Italian service of Reuters.

He studied at Harvard University and the London School of Economics.

He returned to Reuters in 2013 after almost 13 years in the Wall Street Journal, where he specialized in financial and business reporting at the newspaper’s offices in London, Paris and Rome.

“For 170 years Reuters has stood out for its independent, credible and global journalistic coverage,” Galloni said in a statement from her intelligence agency. “I am honored to lead a leading editorial office, full of talented, dedicated and inspiring journalists,” added Galloni, who officially takes office on April 19.

The search for the new director of Reuters took place at a time when other major media outlets are facing succession issues in their editorial office.

Both the Washington Post, where CEO Martin Barron retired in February, and the Los Angeles Times, where Norman Perlstein resigned as editor-in-chief in December, are looking for replacements.
