For the first time, the management of ISS (International Space Station, in free translation) will be in the hands of a woman . The position will be occupied by the engineer Dana Weigel who has worked for 20 years at NASA .
The change marks the moment in which the agency assumes a commitment with innovation, exploration and scientific advancement.
Ken Bowersox, NASA associate administrator for space operations, said Dana is “an excellent choice to lead the space station program during this busy period in spaceflight manned especially aboard humanity's home in orbit [estação espacial]”.
Weigel will be responsible for the management, development, integration and operation of the ISS. The space station houses a laboratory that develops scientific research, technological innovations and space exploration through global cooperation.

The engineer began her career at Barrios Technology in 1994 and became an employee at NASA in 2004 .
At the agency, he previously held positions as manager of the Space Station Vehicles office, between 2014 and 2021, where he was responsible for the support, replacement and development of systems and hardware for cargo facilities on the ISS.
She also served as deputy head of the Flight Management office between 2012 and 2014, and was flight director between 2004 and 2014.
Born in Baltimore (USA), Weigel holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University. Throughout her career, she has been recognized with awards and medals at NASA, such as outstanding service, exceptional leadership and distinguished service. Additionally, she received the Stellar Award from the Rotary National Award for Space Achievement in 2000 and 2007.
Previously, the position was held by Joel Montalbano , who will assume the role of associate administrator in NASA's Space Operations Mission Directorate. The change will come into effect from April 7th.
