The first visit of an Irish Foreign Minister to Greece, after 17 years, is made today by Simon Coveni, who also holds the portfolio of the Ministry of Defense. At 12:00 Nikos Dendias received the Irish counterpart at the doorstep of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then they had a private meeting in his office. Extensive talks are then held between the two delegations.
Discussions between the two Foreign Ministers cover the further development of bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas, with a focus on a recently developed Road Map (trade, economy, culture, issues of the Diaspora, etc.), while it is expected to focus on international and regional developments, with an emphasis on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, Western Balkans and the Middle East. Various EU issues are also expected to be discussed, such as immigration and the EU-UK negotiation process, including the Irish Protocol.
After the talks, the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Ireland will make joint statements to the press, around 13:20, after which a working lunch will take place.
