On Saturday, March 13, the State Corporation for Space Activities “Roscosmos” on its official website demonstrated the updated design of the Soyuz-2 launch vehicle. Its launch is scheduled for next Saturday, March 20.
The design of the Soyuz-2 rocket has not changed for several decades, and finally Roscosmos decided to change the color scheme. Instead of the classic gray-orange color scheme, the updated rocket is presented in white and blue tones. The creators’ new design was inspired by the prototype of the Vostok launch vehicle, on which the legendary Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin made his first flight into space 60 years ago. This prototype is now installed in the VDNKh pavilion in Moscow.

As part of the redesign, it was decided to replace the gray edging on the rocket body with the corporate bright blue color of Glavkosmos Launch Services, the operator of Roskosmos. The head fairing will retain the classic white color, and the transition compartment is painted blue instead of gray. Also, all the elements of the classic orange color on the rocket were repainted in blue, and gray in white.

Roskosmos notes that all launches of the Soyuz-2 carrier rocket under the contract with Glavkosmos Launch Services this year will be carried out in an updated color scheme. It is not specified whether Roskosmos will return to the classic gray-orange combination.
