For the first time in the world: unmanned hydrogen shuttles to be launched in Estonia

The startup Auve Tech, which develops unmanned vehicles, today, on June 17, officially announced that from July 5 in Estonia, in the city of Tartau, branded unmanned shuttle vans will be launched, which will run on hydrogen fuel on public roads. Moreover, the ERR publication, citing its sources at the University of Tartu, which helped develop the new shuttle, reports that it is the world’s first unmanned vehicle that runs on hydrogen fuel.

The developers of the project said that the minibus really will not have a human operator – instead, the device will work on automatic, but, of course, there will be remote control in case of unforeseen situations. At the same time, due to the exclusion of the operator, it was possible to accommodate six passengers at once in a rather compact cabin, who will be transported over short distances. The authors of the drone themselves call the novelty the transport of the last kilometer – the shuttle will take people home or deliver them to transport hubs intended for longer trips. For example, to railway stations or airports.

Also in the publication of the ERR publication there is a comment by Johannes Mossov, CEO of Auve Tech, that this transport is incredibly important for the country’s ecology – it is much more efficient to use these shuttles on hydrogen instead of a personal car on gasoline. However, despite the obvious environmental friendliness of hydrogen, Johannes did not say anything about the safety of this type of fuel, because hydrogen is actually a flammable substance, odorless and colorless. In addition, so far there is no reliable information on the conditions under which people will be able to use such drones.
