For the second year, PPC supplies electricity to 4.4 million households exclusively from RES, participating in ‘Earth Day’

PPC, a pioneer in achieving national goals to increase clean energy production, for the second consecutive year participates on April 22, in World Earth Day, electrifying 4,400,000 households for 24 hours, with energy exclusively from renewable sources, with free availability of the GreenPass service.

As the largest supplier of energy from renewable sources, PPC guarantees that the more energy consumed on April 22, the more it will be committed by PPC certified RES. In this way, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from domestic use will be reduced by 16,000 tonnes in a single day.

PPC remains firmly committed to the implementation of actions with environmental impact that include:

– the increase of the installed capacity from RES (including hydroelectric) to 39% of the total installed capacity of RES in the country,

– the reforestation and restoration of fire-affected areas (with the execution of anti-corrosion and anti-flood works in an area of 35 thousand acres in North Evia, the disposal of 80 thousand olive saplings in Olympia, etc.),

– participation in the GR-eco Islands initiative for the green transition of the Greek islands, aiming at their energy and climate neutrality,
– the creation of 1,000 electric car charging stations in the medium and 10,000 in the long term,

– the implementation of programs for coastal clean-up and the protection of the coastal and marine ecosystem (Project Paralies),

– the implementation of investments for the replacement of old Thermal Production Units with new modern technology, increased efficiency with less emissions,

– the continuation of the extensive programs of environmental restoration of the soils with landscaping, tree planting, restructuring of crops, creation of green zones, as well as the protection of water and fauna, with the creation of appropriate infrastructure projects (lakes and wetlands). In 2021 alone, 7,455 m² of soil was restored and 1,125 m² of trees were planted.

Sofia Dimtsa, PPC’s Director of Corporate Relations and Communication, said: “Strengthening energy independence nationally and reducing conventional energy sources are prerequisites for overcoming the energy crisis. In 2021, PPC reduced CO2 emissions from production 32% compared to 2019, increased by 88% the RES stations that joined the Network, compared to 2020, while 93% of all electricity generated came from units with certified environmental management systems. With steady and confident steps to further enhance renewable energy sources, we are reducing our energy footprint, reaffirming our leading role in the energy transition. On April 22, PPC becomes a helper and society participates in the great battle for the environment , in favor of the future of the Earth “.
