For WTO, access to vaccines and fiscal space are crucial for countries to recover

The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said this Friday (18) that the two most important factors for the economic recovery of any country, at this moment, are the access to vaccines against the Covid-19 and fiscal space.

The statement was made during a panel at the Munich Security Conference.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala lamented the inequality in the distribution of vaccines around the world, with a lack of immunizers especially in Africa, and recalled the work of the WTO to try to reduce barriers to the marketing of medical supplies between countries, in the midst of the pandemic.

She highlighted the concentration in just a few countries in the production of medical supplies and vaccines.

Also present at the event, David Malpass, president of the World Bank, said he feared that the G20 countries are not identifying the measures to be taken in order to deal with excess indebtedness.

Another member of the panel, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, also warned of the divergence in access to health supplies.

“It is crucial to reduce this divergence, or we will all pay a price”, he warned, citing the insecurity that persists about new risks in the pandemic and also the loss of potential for economic development.
