The intense rains seen in recent days should continue to hit Minas Gerais and also the neighboring states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo in the coming days. At the end of the week, however, they should have a break and give way to a strong heat wave for a few days.
“Humidity convergence is very accentuated between Goiás and Minas Gerais, going to Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo,” said Francisco de Assis Diniz, head of weather forecast at the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), in an interview with CNN this Sunday (9).
“These conditions persist until the beginning of this week and the rain should continue in these regions. The forecast for the next four days is that the rain will reach 200 millimeters in this Southeast region, reaching Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and the south of Espírito Santo.”
According to Diniz, in some parts, in the case of Minas, it has already rained in recent days more than the average for the entire month of January.
The meteorologist explains that it is normal to have heavy rains in these regions at this time of year, remembering recent years of heavy rainfall, the case of 2019 (the same year in which the Brumadinho dam broke, in Minas Gerais, on January 25th).
“Minas Gerais suffered from a lot of rain in January 2019; in Belo Horizonte [naquele ano], it rained the equivalent of half the entire year”, he said. “But what is there today is a lot of rain in a short period of day, in three, four days; this is not normal.”
Starting next Thursday, Diniz says that there should be a one-week truce in the rains, marked, on the other hand, by intense heat waves.
“From Thursday to Friday, there will be a respite of at least a week in these rains, taking the Southeast, Bahia, the Federal District, the famous summer. However, over the weekend and next week there should be a very strong heat wave, which will catch Rio Grande do Sul as well,” he said.
