Forecast: Smoke from Amazon fires expected to reach southern Brazil today

The southern region of Rio Grande do Sul is expected to be hit between today (3) and tomorrow (4) by smoke from fires in the Amazon, according to a forecast from MetSul Meteorologia. According to the information, a corridor of soot is moving towards the area.

The Copernicus System, the European Union’s Earth observation program, projects that the dense corridor of smoke, caused by the large number of fires recorded in recent weeks in the Amazon and other regions of the country, will move south, advance towards the Atlantic Ocean and, due to the effect of low and high pressure centers, move again, this time to the north, taking the smoke to the southeast of Brazil, reaching Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo.

According to MetSul, the origin of the smoke is mainly in the south of the state of Amazonas, in the so-called deforestation arc, as well as in Rondônia and Bolivia, where the number of fires has broken records this August.

According to data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), satellites identified 3,432 hotspots between 9 pm on Sunday (1) and 9 pm this Monday (2) in the Amazon. This is the worst day of fires in the Amazon this year, surpassing the 3,224 hotspots in the biome recorded on August 30.

Across the country, 68,635 fire outbreaks were recorded in August 2024. The number shows that there was an increase of 144% compared to the same period in 2023, when Brazil recorded 28,056 fire outbreaks.

Unlike the Amazon region, where the smoke acts closer to the surface and worsens air quality, in the South this smoke remains suspended in the atmosphere. Therefore, MetSul warns that the effects should be noticed by the grayer tone of the sky and the enhanced colors of the sun at dawn and late afternoon.
