Foreign diplomats react to Biden’s poor debate performance

United States President Joe Biden’s poor performance in the US presidential debate CNN against former President Donald Trump resonated around the world, with foreign diplomats expressing shock and concern.

“Difficult to watch” was how several foreign diplomats described Thursday night’s (27) debate between Biden and Trump.

The overwhelming feeling among more than half a dozen diplomats from Europe, the Middle East and Asia with whom the CNN What he said was that it was “a bad night for Biden,” as one European diplomat put it.

Biden’s debate failure was front-page news across Europe, with newspapers on both the left and right criticizing the president.

Preparing for Trump’s potential return

The president’s debate performance also heightened concerns already expressed about the policies Trump would likely pursue if he wins in November.

On Thursday, Trump once again displayed his isolationist tendencies and NATO-skeptical worldview. In the debate, Trump questioned Ukraine’s continued funding of its war with Russia and falsely claimed that the US had given more aid to Ukraine than all other European countries combined.

Trump even spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin about his “dream” of invading Ukraine. He also attacked Biden for withdrawing from Afghanistan and argued that this was the reason Putin invaded Ukraine in 2022.
