US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today, ahead of talks between the US and Russian presidents tomorrow, the State Department said.
Ned Price, a spokesman for the US Secretary of State, said the United States remained committed to NATO’s open door policy and that the alliance should be ready to accept candidates when they were ready.
Ukraine, a former Soviet republic, aspires to join the European Union and NATO.
Zelensky, for his part, said that in talks with Blinken, the two sides agreed to continue “their joint and coordinated action.”
“We thank the United States, a strategic partner and ally, for our continued support for our national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Nothing (will be decided) for Ukraine without Ukraine,” Zelensky said in a Twitter post.
