Foreign Minister on Gorbachev: We regret the loss of a great European who promoted democratization

His regret for the death of Russian politician and former leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev expressed the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a post on Twitter, speaking of a “great European” who made a decisive contribution to the democratization of his country.

“We express our regret for the loss of a great European, Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

And it is added that he “made a decisive contribution to the end of the cold war, the promotion of nuclear disarmament and the democratization of his country. Sincere condolences to his family and to the people of Russia.”

We remind you that Mikhail Gormachev passed away yesterday at the age of 91 and according to the Guardian, he had been admitted for treatment in a central hospital in Moscow.

“Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev was instrumental in ending the Cold War, promoting nuclear disarmament and democratizing his country,” says the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias in a post on his twitter.

“Mikhail Gorbachev was an iconic political figure of the 20th century,” said Mr Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis via Twitter. “He played a decisive role in the end of the Cold War, paving the way for a free Europe. He showed that History can be written not with wars but with acts of peace”.

“Mikhail Gorbachev was an inspired politician, who had freedom, humanity and peace as guideposts on his political path,” says the government representative Yiannis Economou in his post on Facebook, on the occasion of the death of the last Soviet leader.

“With the bold policies he adopted, he paved the way for the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the totalitarian regimes of existing socialism. His imprint on history will remain indelible”, notes Mr. Economou.
