Foreign Minister: Turkey distorts reality to cover up its own violations of international law

It did not go unanswered the letter sent by Turkey to the UN, through which he accused, among others, Greece of illegal militarization of the Aegean islands.

“Turkey is trying to distort reality and create a smokescreen to cover up its own persistent violations of international law,” his spokesman said. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexandros Papaioannou, answering a relevant question from a journalist.

“As it is known, it has issued a threat of war against Greece if it exercises its legal rights (casus belli), violates national sovereignty and disputes the sovereign rights of Greece, illegally occupies territories of other states, destabilizes other countries by keeping troops and mercenaries”, reports Mr. Papaioannou.

“At the moment when it has one of the largest amphibious fleets facing the Greek islands, it asks, without hesitation, Greece, a country fully committed to the observance of international law, to give up the basic right of self-defense”, he emphasizes characteristically and adds:

“Her provocative as well as unfounded unilateral accusations are another attempt to cover up her daily delinquent behavior, as well as her planned illegal actions.”

“Greece will respond, to what is mentioned in the letter, with a view to protecting its inalienable rights, always on the basis of respect for international law,” he concludes.
