Foreign Ministry Spokesman: Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Jiang Yu’s Regular Press Conference

“Completely unacceptable,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexandros Papaioannou in a statement earlier today to ERT, recalling that the Russian embassy in Athens had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry.

“We reiterated to the Russian side that they have an obligation to respect international law,” Papaioannou said. “Respect for the sovereignty and territorial independence of Ukraine is non-negotiable, as for any other country, and this is the Gospel of Greek foreign policy, according to Nikos Dendias.”

As he stressed, the embassies must play a specific role, there must be a communication that allows maintaining a good, positive atmosphere between the two sides. However, he said, this did not happen in the case of the Russian embassy, whose actions are unacceptable.

Commenting on yesterday’s announcement by the Russian embassy, which on the occasion of the illumination of the Parliament in the colors of Ukraine called on the Greeks to “come together”, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in an interview:

“I have not seen such language used. I consider the announcement unacceptable and not in line with diplomatic tactics.”

Mr. Papaioannou pointed out that the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has information and that is why he called the Russian ambassador and he was protested.

“It was stressed that there were airstrikes that killed ten of our compatriots, and that Russia must respect humanitarian law,” Papaioannou said.

He also mentioned that about 100 Greeks have stated that they want to return to the Greek consulates in Odessa and Mariupol. The number of Greeks in Kyiv is less than 30 people. A large part of the Greeks do not want to move, while their safety is paramount in every action, he stressed.

He also mentioned that there are two ships with Greeks anchored in another port east of Odessa.

“Under martial law, no ship can leave the port. Our consul is in contact with the crews and at the first opportunity we will see what we will do. There are 6 Greek sailors in one, and 7 in the other,” he said. he added that everyone is in good health.
