Today’s black anniversary for the 48 years since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on July 20, 1974 and the continuation of the illegal occupation of more than a third of the island by the Turkish troops, is a reminder to the international community of the flagrant violation of International Law and of the Decisions of the United Nations Security Council by Turkey, states the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its announcement on the 48th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
“The Cyprus issue remains an international issue of illegal invasion and occupation, just like the Russian invasion of Ukraine that has continued in recent months,” he emphasizes and adds:
“Greece, in absolute coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, works with dedication to the fundamental principles of International Law, to the national goal which was and remains the finding of an agreed, fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus Issue, with the evolution of the Republic of Cyprus into a Bi-Communal Bizonal Federation, in the framework defined by the relevant United Nations Resolutions”.
Unfortunately, as the announcement points out, “the unacceptable claims of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership make it impossible to conduct meaningful and effective negotiations within the agreed framework of the United Nations, while its illegal actions in Warsaw also move in a direction opposite to what it mandates the International Community”.
And the announcement of the Foreign Ministry concludes: “Until final success, Greece will remain steadfastly committed to finding a just, functional and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem, which will ensure the sole sovereignty of Cyprus by applying the European acquis to the entire Cypriot territory. Solution , which, in addition, will free the people of Cyprus from the anachronistic system of Guarantees and third-party intervention rights in their affairs and will ensure the complete withdrawal of the illegal occupying troops”.
