North Korea’s Foreign Ministry criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan, accusing the United States of interfering in China’s internal affairs, according to North Korean official KCNA.
Pelosi is the highest-ranking US representative to visit Taiwan in the past 25 years.
Before the trip was confirmed, China condemned Pelosi’s intentions. “If the US insists on following its own course, the Chinese military will never sit idly by,” China’s Defense Ministry declared last week.
The tension between the island and China stems from the Communist Party of China’s claim to self-governing Taiwanese democracy as its own territory.

In Britain, China’s ambassador Zheng Zeguang has promised “serious consequences” if British lawmakers visit Taiwan, The Guardian reported on Tuesday.
As the North Koreans argued, Zeguang told a news conference that the measure would be an interference in China’s internal affairs that would inevitably lead to serious consequences in China-UK relations.
