Forest fire breaks out near Athens, threatening homes

A forest fire driven by strong winds raged in a mountainous region near homes on the outskirts of the Greek capital on Tuesday, prompting authorities in Athens to order the evacuation of residents from at least two areas.

Dense clouds of dark smoke are seen rising into the sky over the Penteli area, where the fire started, approximately 27 kilometers from central Athens.

About 80 firefighters, assisted by 22 trucks and 16 aircraft, were trying to tame the fire, which was advancing on two fronts.

Authorities ordered the evacuation of residents from the Drafi and Anthousa areas. Residents of the region have been advised to be ready to leave their homes if instructed. Traffic has been suspended on the roads leading to Penteli.

“It is a difficult fire and we will do our best to contain it,” fire department spokesman Yiannis Artopios told state-run TV ERT, adding that 28 firefighters from Romania are also assisting Greek firefighters’ efforts. . “We are fighting, trying to surround the fire.”

Last year, wildfires destroyed some 121,000 hectares of forests and plains in different parts of Greece as the country experienced its worst heat wave in 30 years.
