Former aide to Prince Charles accused of ‘suspicious’ aid to Saudi businessman

A former aide to Prince Charles has “temporarily resigned” from the role of head of an institution set up by the Prince of Wales to investigate his relationship with a Saudi businessman.

According to the Sunday Times, the 51-year-old Mahfouz became Commander of the British Empire by Prince Charles in a private ceremony held in November 2016 at Buckingham Palace, an event that was not published in the official list of royal obligations. Such a distinction allowed to support the request of Saudi Arabia to acquire British citizenship, according to the newspaper.

The Sunday Times reports that Mahfouz, who denies any wrongdoing, has donated large sums of money to rehabilitation projects that have been of particular interest to the Prince of Wales.

Michael Fawcett has resigned as general manager of The Prince’s Foundation, which he has held since 2018, the foundation has been set up by Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest son.

On Saturday, “Michael Fawcett offered to retire temporarily as director general of The Prince’s Foundation for as long as the administrative investigation is ongoing,” said Douglas Connell, president of the foundation.

“The Prince’s Foundation accepted this offer. “Michael fully supports the ongoing investigation and confirmed that he will cooperate in the investigation.”

A spokeswoman for The Prince’s Foundation also said the allegations against Fawcett were being taken “very seriously”.

Fawcett began working for the royal family in 1981 as the queen’s servant and rose through the ranks until he became an aide to Prince Charles and helped him get dressed every morning.

In 2003 he was acquitted of charges of financial misconduct involving the sale of gifts to the royal family.
