Former CEO of WEX cryptocurrency exchange arrested in Poland

The former head of the largest Russian cryptocurrency exchange WEX, the “successor” of BTC-e, Dmitry Vasiliev was detained by the Polish police in the capital of Warsaw.

It is not yet known exactly why Vasiliev was detained. Most likely, this is due to the criminal case against the former head of WEX in Kazakhstan. Vasiliev’s “close friend” told the BBC that the arrest took place on August 11 at the Warsaw airport. According to him, the Polish authorities have no claims against Vasiliev – the prosecutor’s office is deciding on the extradition of the detainee to Kazakhstan.

A criminal case against Vasiliev in Kazakhstan was opened in the spring of 2019. A resident of Almaty told the police about the loss of $ 20,000 – the funds allegedly disappeared from the account on the WEX exchange and Vasiliev, as the head of the site, should be responsible for this. At the same time, Vasiliev himself stressed that he sold the site in mid-2018 and has nothing to do with the loss of user funds.

Recall that the WEX exchange itself went offline in December 2018 after several domain name changes. Vasiliev was previously arrested in Italy, but then he managed to return to Russia.
