Ratan Tata, the former Tata Group chairman who brought his Indian conglomerate to international prominence, which he expanded with a series of high-profile acquisitions, has died aged 86. Tata, who has been the group’s chairman for more than 20 years, was in intensive care at a Mumbai hospital, two sources familiar with his condition said. After studying architecture at Cornell University, Ratan Tata returned to India and in 1962 began working for the conglomerate founded by his great-grandfather almost a century earlier. He worked in several Tata companies such as Telco (now Tata Motors Ltd) and Tata Steel Ltd, making his mark after eliminating losses and increasing market share at National Radio & Electronics Company.
