He will stay in the territory of the “Halfway Half” – institutions for rehabilitation and reintegration to society for several weeks. After this, the developer will be released in the framework of parole with “work restrictions”.
Griffith – a former Ethereum Foundation employee and one of the creators of ENS – was arrested at the end of November 2019 on charges of violating US sanctions.
The reason was the program of a programmer to North Korea to participate in blockchain conference, where he allegedly told representatives of the DPRK to use cryptocurrencies to circumvent sanctions and carry out cross-border translations. At the same time, Griffith did not receive special permissions from the US Ministry of Justice and the control of foreign assets (OFAC) to visit North Korea and the provision of any services or goods.
In September 2021, the programmer pleaded guilty. Six months later, he was sentenced to 63 months of prison and a fine of $ 100,000. In July 2024, the term was reduced to 56 months.
In January, US President Donald Trump signed a decree on the full and unconditional pardon of the creator of the Silk Road Darknnet Ross Ulbricht.
