Former ‘fashion guru’ Peter Nygaard found guilty of four counts of sexual assault

Former Canadian fashion guru Peter Nygaard was found guilty today of four charges sexual assaultby a court of TorontoCanadian television CBC News reported.

82-year-old Nygard was on trial by the Ontario Superior Court for five counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible restraint. The case involved offenses which were committed from 1980 to 2005. Jurors found him not guilty of a fifth count of sexual assault and a charge of forcible restraint.

Nygard was arrested in late 2020 by Canadian police at the request of US prosecutors who accused him of using his businesses to attract women and young girls in the USA, Canada and the Bahamas and forced them to sexually satisfy him and his associates. About a year later he was prosecuted on the same grounds in Toronto.

Nygard’s sentence will be announced at a later date. His lawyer, Brian Greenspan, has not ruled out an appeal. The US has sought his extradition from Canada, accusing him for human trafficking between 1990-2020.

Nygaard was born in Finland but grew up in Manitoba, Canada, where he founded his own fashion companies and eventually became one of the country’s richest people.
