Former French Prime Minister F. Figion sentenced to four years in prison

Former French Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy’s François Fillon was sentenced today to four years in prison for fictitiously recruiting his wife into parliament for a number of years. Penelope’s wife was also sentenced to two years in prison and the court imposed a fine of 375,000 euros on each.

The Figion couple, who were not present at the trial, insisted – as in the first instance – that the employment was real and not fictitious, but without convincing the Court of Appeal.

If the Figion couple does not exercise their right to appeal the decision, they will be summoned to a sentencing judge, who can decide, for example, whether to wear an electronic bracelet or go to jail.
