Former head of closed WEX exchange released in Poland with ban on extradition to Kazakhstan

In August, Polish police detained Dmitry Vasiliev, former director of the WEX exchange, which closed in 2018, at a request from Kazakhstan. However, the court has now ruled to release him.

The RBC edition managed to talk to Vasiliev. He said that he was already in Russia, but the case against him in Poland has not yet been closed. His arrest was connected with the request of the Kazakh prosecutor’s office, which asked to extradite the head of WEX.

“Yes, he’s free. The Polish court has banned his extradition to Kazakhstan, but the decision is not yet final, ”said the Polish lawyer of Vasiliev Krzysztof Brola.

In Kazakhstan, a criminal case against Vasiliev was initiated in the spring of 2019. One of the WEX clients filed a report with the police about the loss of $ 20,000, which he deposited on the exchange. However, Vasiliev himself emphasizes that he sold the site back in 2018 and has nothing to do with the loss of investors’ money. At the same time, the total amount of losses of investors on WEX is supposedly $ 450 million. A significant part of the disappeared money belongs to investors from all over the world, although most of WEX’s clients were from the countries of the former USSR.

Recall that the WEX exchange itself went offline in December 2018 after several domain name changes. Earlier, Vasiliev was arrested in Italy, but then he managed to return to Russia.
