Former King of Spain Juan Carlos returns to his homeland after two years of self-exile in Abu Dhabi

The former king of the country returns to Spain today, Thursday (19/5) by air Juan Carlos who had exiled himself to Abu Dhabi in the aftermath financial scandals that had caused uproar in the palace.

This is his first visit to the country since settling in Abu Dhabi in 2020.

Juan Carlos will travel to Sansenzo, in the northern region of Galicia, to watch boat races and will conclude his visit on Monday, when he will meet with his son, King Felipe, in Madrid, as he reported yesterday, Wednesday, afternoon in an announcement by the Royal House.

The 84-year-old former monarch, according to the Athenian News Agency, will not stay at the Palace of Tartuela in Madrid, the official residence of the king, the announcement states.

The popularity of the former king, who was once highly regarded in his country for his role in its democratization, has dropped dramatically following a series of scandals, including his love affair with a Dane, Corina zu Sein-Wittgenstein , and the elephant hunt in which he had taken part in Botswana.

In 2014 he resigned from the throne.

He left Spain after tax evasion investigations

Juan Carlos left Spain for Abu Dhabi in August 2020 after a a series of investigations against him that had begun in his country and in Switzerland for tax evasion.

He currently has a permanent residence in the United Arab Emirates, but said in March that he would visit Spain frequently after prosecutors stopped investigating him.

However, the former monarch is likely to be tried in Britain on charges of harassing his Danish ex-girlfriend.
