Former One Direction member dies after falling from hotel balcony in Argentina

British musician Liam Payne, former member of the boy band One Direction, died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in the Palermo neighborhood, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Police are investigating whether it was suicide or an accident. He was 31 years old.

According to CNN affiliate Todo Notícias, this Wednesday (16), police arrived at the hotel after receiving a call about a man with aggressive behavior who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The musician’s death was confirmed by SAME – equivalent to the Brazilian SAMU. The director, doctor Alberto Crescenti, stated that Payne’s injuries resulting from the fall were fatal.

“There was no way to do anything,” explained the doctor. He clarified that Liam fell from the third floor into the inner courtyard of the hotel where he was staying.

Crescenti then indicated that they were awaiting the results of the autopsy to determine how the approximately 14 meter fall that led to Liam Payne’s death occurred. “According to what the team saw, he had a fracture at the base of his skull. Very serious injuries,” he added.

Currently, a prosecutor and the area’s jurisdiction are already investigating the cause of the singer’s death. The city police are also involved. “Then comes the forensic examination and the autopsy”, concluded the doctor.

Liam Payne opened up about his struggle with alcoholism

In May last year, he revealed he had been sober for more than 100 days and had “felt amazing” since giving up alcohol. In an interview with iFL TV, the former member of One Direction commented on the positive moment he was experiencing at the time.

“I feel really good. Now I’m sober, over 100 days, and I feel amazing. Fan support has been really good,” he said.
