Former President Mikheil Saakashvili has been arrested in Georgia

Georgian police have arrested a former opposition leader and politician Michael Saakashvili in Agriculture, Russian news agency TASS reported on Friday, citing the country’s prime minister. Irakli Garibashvili.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concern as soon as it was informed of Saakashvili’s arrest, the presidency spokesman said, adding that Ukrainian diplomats in Tbilisi were working to assist Saakashvili.

Saakashvili, who has settled in Ukraine, announced earlier this week that he plans to fly home to local elections held tomorrow Saturday, despite being sentenced in absentia in his country and facing prison sentences in order to contribute as he had said to the “salvation of the country”, while calling on citizens to take to the streets after the election, Reuters reports.

Saakashvili, who led the “Revolution of the WheelsIn Georgia in 2003, he said the charges against him, alleging abuse of power and cover-up, were politically motivated.

Garibashvili had stated that Saakashvili could be arrested if he returned to Georgia.

Today Saakashvili informed his supporters through social media that returned in Georgia and urged them to vote for the opposition and gather in the heart of the capital Tbilisi on Sunday.

He then posted a video which he said he shot at night in the city Batumi of Georgia, through which he calls on his supporters to vote for the United National Movement, the party he founded, or any small party that opposes the ruling Georgian Dream party.

“Everyone must go to the polls and vote, and on October 3 we must fill Eleftherias Square. “If there are 100,000 people, no one can beat us,” he said in a video he posted.You see, I risked everything, my life, my freedom, everything, in order to come here. I just want one thing from you – go to the polls».
