Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Farewell Brings Thousands to Tokyo

The murder of Shinzo Abe last Friday (8) shocked Japan, a country long considered one of the safest in the world.

The former prime minister’s funeral was held on Tuesday (12) by Abe’s widow, Akie Abe, at Zojoji Temple in the capital Tokyo. Participation was limited to family members and people close to the former prime minister, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.

After the funeral, the hearse passed Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party headquarters, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Parliament Building, TV Asahi, a subsidiary of the CNN .

The hearse was welcomed by members of the Japanese government, including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Abe’s brother and Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi. They were seen bowing to the hearse. Abe’s widow, Akie Abe, greeted those present at the scene by nodding from the front seat of the vehicle.

In mourning, many Japanese stood in the streets outside Tokyo’s Zojoji Temple for the funeral of the late former Japanese leader. In a wave of grief, people of all ages and all walks of life have arrived to pay their respects to Abe as Japan reels from the shock of his murder.

The mood outside the Temple was somber, and many brought flowers, banknotes and green tea – symbols of help in the afterlife – to pay tribute to Abe, the longest-serving prime minister.

The people with whom CNN spoke said they were shocked by the former prime minister’s assassination last Friday. In a wave of grief, people formed long lines on the streets of the Japanese city to pay their respects. Some wiped away tears as they paid tribute to the former leader.

The hearse will travel from Zojoji Temple to Kirigaya Funeral Hall, where Abe’s body will be cremated later on Tuesday, according to TV Asahi.

Abe’s office has set up an altar for the public to lay flowers in the western city of Yamaguchi, his constituency, and will also add a space for incense.

In the days following Abe’s death, many Japanese in Nara gathered and laid flowers at a makeshift memorial near where he was shot dead.
