Former pro-Russian Ukrainian Orthodox Church declares ‘complete independence’ from Moscow Patriarchate

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church, under the auspices of the Moscow Patriarchate, announced today that it was suspending its relations with Russia over its invasion of Ukraine and declaring its “complete independence” from Russian spiritual authorities.

“We do not agree with the Patriarch of Moscow Cyril (…) regarding the war in Ukraine,” the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate said in a statement on this historic initiative, after the work of the synod was completed. dedicated to Russian “aggression”. During the meeting, it declared “its full independence and autonomy”.

Until now, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate has belonged to the Russian Patriarch Kirill, who has expressed his support for Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“The senate condemns the war, which is a violation of God’s command to ‘kill,’ and expresses its condolences to all those who suffer because of the war,” the statement added.

According to the statement, the Church’s relations with the Moscow Patriarchate have been “complicated to non-existent” since martial law was declared in Ukraine.

This initiative is the second schism in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in a few years. Hundreds of priests recently signed an open letter requesting that Cyril be tried by an ecclesiastical court for taking part in the war.
