Former Russian President Warns Nuclear Threat ‘Is Not a Bluff’

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev declared on Tuesday that Moscow has the right to defend itself with nuclear weapons if it is taken beyond its limits and that this “certainly is not a bluff”.

Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, also warned that the country has the right to respond “without much consultation” as tensions mount with the West over referendums held in large swaths of occupied Ukrainian territory. by Russia.

The official has regularly issued aggressive statements about the West and Ukraine in recent months, highlighting his transformation from a seemingly Western-minded liberal as president from 2008 to 2012 to a strident geopolitical hawk.

On September 22, Medvedev had already said that any weapons in the arsenal, including “strategic nuclear weapons”, can be used to defend territories in Ukraine that have been claimed by Russia.
