Former samba school drum master shot dead in Rio

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro are investigating the death of Paulo Silva Vieira de Araújo, aged 59. Known as Mestre Paulão, he is a former drum master at the Renascer de Jacarepaguá samba school, which competes in the Silver Series of the Rio carnival.

According to the Military Police, on Friday night (12), men from the Jacarepaguá Battalion (18th BPM) were called to check a homicide in the Anil neighborhood, in the west zone of Rio. According to the unit's command , Mestre Paulão was found dead, with marks from gunshots.

A second man, identified as Francisco Camelo da Silva, had injuries to his leg and was taken to the Lourenço Jorge Municipal Hospital, in Barra da Tijuca, also in the west zone. A CNN Awaits information from the Municipal Health Department about his health status.

The Capital Homicide Police Station (DHC) reported that investigations are underway to determine the authorship and motivation of the crime.

In a profile dedicated to the school's drums, a tribute to the former master was published.
