Former Secretary General of Equality and historical member of PASOK Mika Koutsileou died

Former Secretary General of Equality and historical figure of PASOK, Maria-Niki (Mika) Koutsilaiou passed away today, at the age of 83, after a long battle with cancer.

A founding member of the party, he was a member of the Executive Secretariat and a member of the Central Committee, from its first composition until 2000, when he retired from active politics.

A close associate of George Gennimatas, he was also the Special Secretary for Welfare (1985-89), as well as a member of the initial design team of the NSS, as an advisor to Paraskeva Avgerinos.

An important figure in the feminist movement in Greece, she was a founding member of the Women’s Political Association. In the professional arena he excelled as a lawyer, while he was a member of the Board of the Hellenic Cinema Center and its legal advisor.

She left her last breath at the Evangelismos hospital where she was treated, after a long battle with cancer.

She was married to lawyer Giannis Koulaxis, with whom she had two sons.

Today we say goodbye to a beloved comrade, activist and feminist, Mika Koutsilaiou.

He was a founding member of PASOK, a member of the party’s Executive Secretariat and Central Committee, from its first composition until 2000, when he retired from active politics.

Among others, Mika Koutsilaiou served as General Secretary of Gender Equality (1997-1999) and Special Secretary for Welfare (1985-89), as well as a member of the initial design team of the NSS and the drafting of the corresponding law establishing it.

Above all, however, Mika was a great woman who with her knowledge, ethos, struggles, but also her contribution to the women’s movement, contributed the most to the removal of gender discrimination.

It will be in our hearts forever. Warm condolences to her family.
