Former South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun tried to take his own life while in custody, the general commissioner of the Korean Correctional Service said on Wednesday (11).

Kim was detained in Seoul on Sunday (8), days after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law triggered a widespread political crisis in the country.

Kim reportedly recommended the imposition of martial law and was the first figure arrested in the case.

Shin Yong-hae, the general commissioner of the Korean Correctional Service, said Kim made the suicide attempt before a formal arrest warrant was issued on Tuesday.

He was moved to an isolation room and has no health problems, Shin said.
