Former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev dies at 92

Former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev has died aged 92 in Moscow. The death was confirmed this Tuesday (30) by Russian news agencies.

Mikhail Gorbachev was the last president of the Soviet Union before its dissolution.

Gorbachev, whose tumultuous government was associated with the terms perestroika and glasnost (reform and opening up) has died after a long illness, Russian state news agencies reported.

“Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev died this evening after a serious and prolonged illness,” the Central Clinical Hospital said, according to RIA/Novosti, on Tuesday (30).

History

Mikhail Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931, in the city of Privolnoye, Russia, to a family of Russian-Ukrainian immigrants.

He graduated in Law in 1955 from the Moscow State University and in Economics in 1967 from the Faculty of Economy.
