The ex-Spice Girl Melanie C known in the British group as Sporty Spice said she was sexually assaulted by a masseuse before the premiere of the Spice Girls on stage in the 1990s.
She first spoke about the episode during British journalist Elizabeth Day’s “How To Fail” podcast.
“What happened to me, I kind of buried it right away, because there were other things I had to focus on,” she said. “Everything was taking me to the pinnacle of what I always wanted to do.”
Melanie, who is promoting her new memoir, “Who I Am,” said the assault took place in Istanbul and that the experience made her feel “vulnerable” and “violated.”
She didn’t say anything about what happened at the time because she “didn’t want to make a fuss” and also “didn’t have time to deal with it”.
The singer described the assault as “mild” on a spectrum of sexual assault and says that at first she didn’t want to mention anything in her memoir, but decided to write it down after remembering it in a dream. “I think it’s really important for me to say that and finally come to terms with what happened.”
“Terrible things happen all the time, and this situation wasn’t as bad as it could have been.”
This is not the first time that Mel C has exposed situations in her personal life. In 2020, she revealed to The Guardian newspaper that at the height of her career “she struggled with an eating disorder and suffered from depression”.
