Former President Donald Trump’s adviser for many years, Steve Bannon, pleaded not guilty today to ignoring a summons from a House of Representatives committee investigating the January 6 violence in the Capitol.
Bannon was prosecuted last week for two counts of contempt of Congress.
When he first appeared in court on Monday, he told reporters that his prosecution was a politically motivated attack on him by President Joe Biden, Justice Minister Merrick Garland and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Trump had instructed his associates not to cooperate with the House committee, claiming that as former president he had the right to keep secret the material he asked him to hand over. Bannon was the architect of Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election and then took over as head of the White House strategy.
The first accusation he faces concerns his refusal to come to testify before the Parliamentary committee and the second his refusal to hand over the requested documents.
Contempt of Congress is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a $ 100,000 fine.
