Former Trump advisor sentenced to 4 months in prison for contempt of Congress

Peter Navarro, former commercial advisor to former US President Donald Trump, was sentenced this Thursday to four months in prison for contempt of Congress after refusing to cooperate with the investigation into the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol from United States.

Federal prosecutors in Washington asked U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta to impose a six-month sentence on Navarro, arguing that he prioritized his loyalty to Trump over the rule of law.

Navarro's lawyers are asking for probation, saying the former White House aide believed he did not need to cooperate with Congress because he thought Trump had invoked the legal doctrine of executive privilege, which protects some presidential records and communications from being disclosed.

Navarro was convicted in September on two counts of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena to turn over documents and give testimony to a Democratic-led House panel.

“They led me to believe that privilege had been invoked and that they accepted it,” Navarro told the House committee on Thursday.

The committee investigated the Jan. 6 attack by Trump supporters and broader attempts by the former president to reverse his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.
