Former Ukrainian Polilent for Pro-Russia is shot dead in Spain

Unidentified armed men shot and killed a former Ukrainian political on the morning of Wednesday (21), in front of a school in a rich suburb of Madrid, the interior ministry of Spain said.

Police received a call on the murder of a Ukrainian citizen at 9:15 am, in front of the American school of Madrid, of an elite institution, located in Pozuelode Alarcon, Madrid police told Reuters news agency.

“Several people shot him on his back and head and then fled toward a forest area,” a source from the interior ministry reported.

The victim, Andriy Portnov, 51, was a senior advisor to former Ukraine Pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovich, who was deposed in a popular revolt in 2014.

Portnov left for Russia in the same year and faced investigations in Ukraine on charges of betrayal and embezzlement, as well as international sanctions, although the accusations and sanctions of the European Union were later withdrawn.

The US Treasury Department included Portnov on its sanctions list in 2021, claiming that he had “cultivated extensive connections with the Ukraine judicial and police apparatus through bribery.”

Crimes in Spain

Since Ukraine’s Russian invasion in February 2022, there have been several high profile crimes involving Russians and Ukrainians in Spain, which has a significant population of expatriates from both countries.

In 2022, six bomb letters were sent to targets throughout Spain, including Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Ukraine and US embassies and government offices.

A retired Spanish civil servant whose search on social networks suggested sympathy for Russia, was arrested for the crimes.

In February 2024, a Russian pilot who deserted Ukraine with his helicopter was found dead with multiple bullet injuries in the parking lot of his building near the pliers.
